Customer Support - Domain Names
Each Registrar has a different process for transferring your Domain. Depending on your Registrar, the G3 Group requires you to do some tasks to ensure that your transfer occurs smoothly. Below you will find step-by-step instructions on the specific tasks you must do depending on whether we are assisting you with the domain transfer or you are doing it yourself.
About Domain Name Transfers
Only the owner or Administrative Contact listed on the current domain record is authorized to make your domain transfer happen. (Specifically, your name and current email address should be listed as the Administrative contact.) Every Registrar (Network Solutions, Register.com, etc.) handles the process differently. If your previous web hosting company registered your name for you, please check your records to be certain the information they provided to the Registrar is still accurate. ( Click here and enter your domain name to view your current records.) The owner of the domain should be you (or your company), the Administrative contact should be you or an authorized person of your company.
What is a Domain Name Transfer?
Your domain registration, in most cases, remains unchanged and is not "transferred". What actually happens is that the name server records that are attached to it are updated to point to your new hosting company. (Name Servers are specialized internet servers that simply tell the world where your web site, email, ftp, etc. is located.) the G3 Group establishes the appropriate name server records to point to your new web site, email server, ftp server, etc.
What is the procedure?
To point your domain name to our name servers we will need to notify your Registrar of the new name server information. Some Registrars work on an email security system (like Network Solutions) and others use a login ID/password system, where the changes can be made on their site. If your domain is protected by a login ID/password system, you must supply that information to the G3 Group if you want us to assist with your transfer. If you have lost the login information, you must contact your Registrar to obtain a copy of that information before proceeding.
How do I start?
Click on the name of your Registrar below to find instructions for a transfer. If your registrar is not listed, go to their site and look for links to "modify domain", "change DNS", "update name servers" or something similar. If you don't know who is the Registrar for your domain name, go to the InterNIC Whois Page , enter your domain name and select Registrar.
